Hi there, Dave from Jasper. We’ve been struggling with Event Tents and have been requiring any event tent with an area of 10 m2 or greater obtain a Development Permit as well as a Building Permit. For an event tent for a wedding or weekend festival this seems to be a bit overkill and often is a little challenging for the safety codes officer to inspect for occupancy once these short term tents are up. I’ve noticed on many development authorities websites that they are not requiring building permits for event tents less than 60 m2 in area, and some have added the caveat that the exception is for tents under this area that are not part of a bar / restaurant. I’ve asked our building safety codes officer and they can’t find anything in building code that relates to this 60 m2 area. Is anyone aware of where this event tents less than 60 m2 building permit exemption comes from?
Thanks,
